Crochet Investigations of Natural Growth

I am interested in natural growth, and the patterns and formulas behind it, such as the Fibonacci numbers and hyperbolic geometry. I found that the mathematical properties of crochet enable me to investigate these formulas.

By writing my own pattern based on the Fibonacci sequence (a series of numbers relating to growth spirals of marine shells, pine cones and seed heads) I have been able to express this growth. Small changes to the pattern, stitch, or needle size, produce surprising changes in the piece. The images that follow are the results of these investigations.
